A Sequential Phonics Program
Sound City Reading is a sequential phonics program.
- This means that students learn the letters of the alphabet and the various phonics patterns one at a time in a specific order. The order is very carefully thought out so that students will learn successfully.
- It also means that a number of reading skills are taught in a specific order so that students will be able to apply them with confidence when learning to spell and read new words.
- It also means that students when students read sentences, easy practice stories, and a selection of children's commercially available trade books, they will be able to read all of the words phonetically except for a limited group of sight words which are taught ahead of time as needed. In other words, all of the reading materials will be decodable. Students will not see words with phonetic patterns that have not yet been taught.
