Welcome to Sound City Reading
My name is Kathy Davis. I've been working as a reading tutor and a teacher since 1985. I've given the name of Sound City Reading to the phonics materials I've developed to help children learn to read and write. I've used this name because the letter charts I put on the wall look like a row of houses in a city.
The Sound City Reading materials are designed to help children learn the phonics patterns they need to become successful, independent readers. I hope that you will find them useful. The downloads are free. You'll need Adobe Reader to download them. It will take a few minutes to download each file. After the file downloads, it takes about another half minute to open. The materials are in the form of pdf files that can be printed as practice books, workbooks, flashcards, and games. You may print the materials from this site or save any of the files to your computer after you open them. Just click on the square disk to save the file. To make it easier to look through the pages of each file, click on the button showing a page with four arrows pointing up, down, left, and right. This will give you a full view of each page. Click the arrows at the top of the page to move from one page to another.
My materials are copyrighted, but I give permission to parents, teachers, and tutors to download and print them for their students. Permission for schoolwide use is permitted. Commercial publication by anyone except myself is prohibited.
I am currently a first grade teacher using the Scott Foresman Reading Street program. I have created some materials which introduce phonics patterns in the same sequence taught in this reading series. There are Phonogram Pattern Worksheets, Decoding Sheets, Stories, Word Wall Materials, and Tests. All of these materials can be reached by clicking the Reading Street For First Grade link on the menu bar on the left side of this page.
I've been working on the site this summer to get the changes made and everything back in order. My e-mail address is email@example.com I really appreciate all of the positive feedback, and thanks for letting me know when downloads don't work. I'll do the best I can to fix them.
Click on any topic on the menu bar on the left to see the related materials.
Use the links on the blue bar at the left to find what you need.
Update on Feb. 11, 2011
I'm hearing that Macintosh Computers won't pull up the Reading Street tests correctly. I don't have any trouble seeing them on my Dell computer at home, so try a non-Mac computer if you're having problems. When I put the pdf files directly onto my school Macintosh, they work fine. My old Macintosh loaded the tests OK, but the new one I was issued this year will not pull them up from this web site. I reloaded the tests, but unfortunately they're still not working on my Mac.
February 2011 - I've added new phonogram booklets and practice stories for beginning readers, see Level 4 Phonogram Patterns. These are useful at the first grade level for reinforcing phonics patterns. I've also made an alternate set of booklets that introduces ou/ouch, ow/cow, and oo/book earlier in the phonetic sequence. The alternate set reduces the number of words taught for each pattern to ten words. This allows each lesson to be taught in a shorter time frame. I'll try to add the alternate version when time permits. I'm also currently working on a color-coded version.
April 2011 - I've put on a few color-coded files: Short Vowel Words and Sentences and the first volume of the Practice Stories - Set Sail. Look for them in the Phonogram Patterns Section. More to come. Many thanks to Chris Bogardus for input and help on the current color-coded design. If you are teaching students in the 4th or 5th grade, or middle school or high school, be sure to look at his web site for older students. It uses a color-coding system designed by Chris. Students respond very well to it.
The following materials were added in the summer of 2009
- A Handwriting Readiness Booklet
- A different Beginning and Ending Sounds Booklet (almost the same as the first one, but with letters introduced in a different order)
- Handwriting Introduction Sheets - large letters to trace and write on legal size paper, to use in kindergarten and at the beginning of first grade
- Handwriting Practice Sheets for First Grade - letters and words on lined paper to trace and write, to use during the first two weeks of school, or whenever extra practice is needed
- New choices for wall charts for the alphabet and and other common phonograms
- Picture cards to use at the readiness or remedial level to develop phonemic awareness - rhyming cards, beginning and ending sound cards, and cards to develop oral blending and segmentation skills.
- Short Vowel Picture/Word Cards
- Picture/word cards for the rest of the Reading Street Units
